The real dispute is usually whether a dangerous condition existed, whether it was detectable, whether it should have been corrected or warned about, and whether that condition actually caused the fall.
That can require more than one kind of expert. A flooring or walkway safety expert may evaluate surface conditions. A human factors expert may address perception, visibility, and behavior. An engineer may evaluate slope, drainage, lighting, or code compliance. A biomechanical expert may address whether the claimed mechanism is consistent with the injury.

Start With the Surface
The walking surface is usually the first place to look.
Tile, concrete, carpet, wood, vinyl, stairs, ramps, mats, and exterior walkways all behave differently under use. Surface texture, contamination, wear, transitions, slope, and maintenance can affect traction and stability.
An expert may evaluate whether the surface itself created an unreasonable risk or whether the problem arose from something on top of it, such as water, grease, dust, debris, ice, or another contaminant.
The key is to identify the physical condition that existed at the time of the incident rather than assume that every smooth or wet surface was unsafe.
Slip Resistance
Slip resistance is often discussed as if it were one universal number. It is not.
Testing can be influenced by the device used, surface condition, contaminant, direction of travel, footwear, and testing protocol. Different standards may apply depending on the setting and the opinion being offered.
An expert should explain what the measurement means and whether the testing method is appropriate for the surface and conditions in question.
A laboratory value or coefficient of friction result is only useful if it relates to the actual circumstances of the fall.
Wet Floors
Water is one of the most common conditions alleged in slip cases.
The source matters. Rainwater tracked into a building presents a different maintenance problem from a leaking refrigeration unit, recently mopped floor, plumbing leak, or spill created by a customer.
The expert may evaluate where the water came from, how long it may have been present, whether mats or drainage were used, whether inspection practices were reasonable, and whether the floor's characteristics changed significantly when wet.
The existence of moisture does not automatically establish that the floor was unreasonably dangerous.
Entrance Mats
Entrance mats can reduce tracked-in moisture, but they can also become part of the dispute.
A mat may curl, bunch, shift, create a height transition, become saturated, or fail to cover the area where water is being tracked.
The analysis may involve mat type, backing, size, placement, condition, maintenance, and how the mat interacted with the surrounding flooring.
In some cases, the issue is not whether a mat was present, but whether the mat itself became a trip or slip hazard.
Floor Transitions
Changes between flooring materials can create unexpected differences in height, traction, or visual appearance.
A transition from carpet to tile, sidewalk to doorway, or one floor finish to another may be central to a fall if the change was abrupt or difficult to perceive.
The expert may measure elevation differences and compare the condition with applicable standards, construction details, and ordinary walking expectations.
Small changes in elevation can be significant in one environment and routine in another. Context matters.
Trip Hazards
Not all falls are slips.
Trips may involve raised sidewalk panels, uneven flooring, thresholds, cords, debris, damaged pavement, abrupt elevation changes, or objects extending into a walking path.
A trip expert may examine the height and shape of the obstruction, lighting, contrast, walking direction, visibility, and surrounding environment. Related civil engineering expertise may be useful when sidewalk or pavement displacement is disputed.
One of the core questions is whether the condition was reasonably noticeable to a person using the area normally.
Sidewalk and Exterior Walkway Cases
Exterior surfaces change over time.
Concrete can settle or heave. Tree roots may displace pavement. Asphalt can deteriorate. Water can accumulate. Repairs can create new transitions between surfaces. The expert may evaluate drainage, slope, cracking, displacement, repair history, weather exposure, and whether the condition developed gradually.
Exterior cases often depend heavily on photographs taken close to the date of the incident because later repairs or additional deterioration can change the scene.
Stairs
Stair falls can involve geometry, handrails, lighting, tread condition, nosing, carpeting, visual contrast, or maintenance.
An expert may measure riser heights, tread depths, widths, landings, rail locations, and consistency between steps.
Consistency can be especially important because people develop a rhythm when using stairs. A single step that differs materially from the others may create a different issue than a staircase where every step has the same dimensions.
Applicable building codes can also matter, but the code in effect when the stairs were constructed or altered should be identified before conclusions are drawn. Related structural issues may arise when stair construction or handrail attachment is disputed.
Ramps and Slopes
Ramps and sloped walkways may raise questions about grade, cross-slope, surface texture, drainage, and handrails.
A surface can become more difficult to traverse when slope and low traction occur together.
The expert should evaluate the actual geometry of the site rather than describing the area generally as "steep."
Measured slope, direction of travel, surface condition, and surrounding layout can help determine whether the configuration materially contributed to the fall.
Lighting and Visibility
A condition can be physically present and still be difficult to perceive.
Poor lighting, glare, shadows, low contrast, visual clutter, and abrupt changes between bright and dark spaces can affect whether a person sees a step, object, liquid, or change in elevation.
A human factors or lighting expert may be useful when visibility is central to the case.
The relevant question is often whether the condition was reasonably detectable from the person's approach path, not whether it can be seen clearly in a photograph taken later with different lighting.
Warnings
Signs, cones, tape, barriers, and verbal warnings can all become part of a premises case.
A warning should be evaluated for placement, visibility, specificity, and whether it actually addressed the hazard.
A sign placed behind the condition may be less useful to someone approaching from the opposite direction. A generic caution sign may provide different information from a warning that identifies a specific wet area or blocked route.
The presence of a warning does not automatically resolve the case, but neither should it be ignored when evaluating what a reasonable pedestrian would have encountered.
Inspection and Maintenance
Many slip and fall cases turn on what happened before the incident.
Floor inspection logs, cleaning records, maintenance schedules, surveillance footage, employee testimony, weather records, and work orders may help establish whether the condition was present long enough to be detected.
The technical expert can explain the nature of the condition and how it may have developed. Questions about actual or constructive notice are legal issues, but the physical evidence may help establish whether the hazard was sudden, recurring, or longstanding.
That difference can be important when evaluating maintenance practices.
Retail and Grocery Store Falls
Retail environments create recurring premises issues because of high foot traffic, product displays, refrigeration, produce areas, carts, and frequent customer activity.
A grocery store spill may have existed for seconds or much longer. Refrigerated cases may generate recurring moisture. Entryways may become wet during storms.
An expert should evaluate the specific mechanism rather than assume that all retail falls arise from the same maintenance problem.
Surveillance footage can be especially valuable because it may show when the condition appeared and how other customers interacted with the area before the fall.
Restaurant and Hospitality Falls
Restaurants, hotels, resorts, and event spaces present different combinations of flooring, food service, lighting, decorative surfaces, pools, and pedestrian traffic.
Grease or liquid contamination may affect kitchen and dining areas. Decorative flooring may create changes in traction. Pool decks and exterior walkways may remain wet during normal use.
The expert may need to distinguish between a condition inherent to the environment and one that created an unreasonable hazard because of design or maintenance.
A wet pool deck, for example, should not be analyzed in exactly the same way as an unexpected puddle in a hotel corridor.
Construction and Work-Site Falls
Falls at construction sites may involve temporary walkways, debris, uneven surfaces, cords, openings, incomplete stairs, ladders, scaffolding, or changing site conditions.
These cases may require a construction safety expert rather than a conventional premises liability expert. Related construction issues may also arise when temporary or incomplete walkways are involved.
The applicable standard may also depend on the worker's role, the work being performed, and who controlled the area.

Footwear
Footwear can affect traction, but it should not be treated as an automatic explanation for a fall.
Sole material, tread, wear, contamination, heel configuration, and shoe condition can all influence performance.
The significance of footwear depends on the surface and mechanism at issue.
An expert may determine that the footwear contributed to the fall, had little effect, or cannot be meaningfully evaluated because the shoes were not preserved.
Human Factors
People do not walk through buildings while continuously inspecting the floor for hazards.
Attention is influenced by signs, merchandise, other pedestrians, destination, lighting, environmental expectations, and the visual characteristics of the walking surface.
A human factors expert may evaluate whether a hazard was conspicuous, whether attention would reasonably have been directed elsewhere, and whether the person's behavior was consistent with normal pedestrian movement.
This type of analysis can be particularly useful when the defense argues that a condition was "open and obvious" based primarily on photographs.
Biomechanics and the Mechanism of the Fall
Sometimes the dispute is not only whether a hazard existed, but whether it actually produced the fall described.
A biomechanical expert may analyze body motion, surveillance video, witness descriptions, footwear, surface interaction, and injury pattern.
For example, a forward trip and a backward slip produce different body mechanics. Video showing the feet and body immediately before the fall can help distinguish between mechanisms.
Biomechanics can also be useful when the claimed injury appears inconsistent with the described movement.
Injury Causation
Premises liability and medical causation are separate issues.
A walkway expert can determine whether the physical environment contributed to a fall. An orthopedic surgeon, neurologist, or other physician may be needed to determine whether the fall caused a torn tendon, fracture, spinal injury, head injury, or other claimed condition. Preexisting disease can complicate that analysis.
A person with arthritis, spinal degeneration, prior surgery, or balance problems may still sustain a new injury from a fall. The medical expert should distinguish baseline conditions from changes attributable to the incident.
Surveillance Video
Video can be some of the strongest evidence in a slip and fall case.
It may show the exact fall, the condition of the area beforehand, cleaning activity, weather tracking, other pedestrians, employee inspections, or when a spill occurred.
The quality and angle matter. A distant camera may establish timing but provide little information about foot movement. A closer view may allow biomechanical analysis. Related accident reconstruction methods can also help when path of travel and timing are disputed.
Experts should work from the original video when possible because screenshots or compressed clips can omit frames and reduce useful detail.
Site Inspections
An inspection months or years after the incident may still provide useful measurements, but the expert should determine what changed.
Flooring may have been replaced. Concrete may have been repaired. Mats may be different. Lighting may have changed. Signs may have been added.
Contemporaneous photographs and video should therefore be compared with the present site.
The goal is to reconstruct the condition at the time of the fall, not simply document what exists when the expert eventually arrives.
Building Codes and Industry Standards
Codes and standards may address stairs, ramps, walking surfaces, accessibility, lighting, handrails, and other conditions.
The applicable requirement depends on the property, construction date, jurisdiction, and whether later modifications occurred.
Some cases also involve industry standards addressing walkway safety, floor testing, or entrance matting.

A technical violation with no connection to the incident may have little causal significance.
Matching the Expert to the Fall
"Slip and fall expert" is a broad label.
A wet tile case may call for a walkway safety or flooring expert. Uneven concrete may be better suited to a civil engineer. A staircase case may require an architect or building code expert. Poor visibility may warrant human factors or lighting expertise. A construction site fall may require an occupational safety expert.
