Agriculture and livestock expert witnesses evaluate whether farmers, ranchers, livestock owners, and agricultural businesses followed accepted practices in managing animals, land, and equipment. They review fencing and pasture conditions, maintenance and inspection records, herd management practices, prior escape or incident history, and photographs of the property to determine whether an injury or loss resulted from a failure to meet the standards of the industry.

Cases commonly involving agricultural experts include vehicle collisions with cattle, horses, or other livestock that escaped onto a roadway, injuries to workers or visitors while handling animals, accidents involving tractors and other farm equipment, disputes over the death or injury of livestock, and negligence claims involving boarding stables and equine facilities. Many of these matters turn on whether the owner knew or should have known about a containment problem and whether reasonable inspection and repair would have prevented it.

Roadway collision cases depend heavily on location. Some states and counties follow open range rules that place little or no duty on owners to fence livestock in, while others require owners to keep animals contained and impose liability when they escape. Within closed range jurisdictions, the questions usually become whether the fence type, height, and condition were adequate for the species and herd size, how often the fence line was checked, and whether gates, cattle guards, and water gaps were maintained. An expert familiar with the governing state’s law and common regional practices is far more useful than one offering a generic opinion.

Animal behavior is often central as well. Cattle, horses, and other livestock respond predictably to stressors such as weather, predators, breeding cycles, and changes in feed or water, and those factors can explain why animals tested or breached a fence. Handling injury cases look at facility design, chute and pen setup, and whether workers were trained in low-stress handling methods appropriate to the animals involved.

The strongest agricultural experts combine academic training with hands-on experience. Many hold advanced degrees in animal science or agricultural engineering, and some carry the Professional Animal Scientist credential through the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists. Former extension specialists and experienced ranch operators bring practical credibility with rural juries. Attorneys should look for an expert who has worked with the same species and type of operation at issue, since a dairy operation, a cow-calf ranch, and a horse boarding facility follow very different practices.
