When a Product Catches Fire: The Role of an Electrical Engineering Expert Witness
A space heater ignites overnight. A phone charger overheats and burns a hand. A piece of industrial equipment shocks the worker operating it. When a product fails electrically and someone gets hurt, the case almost always comes down to a single, technical question: what actually went wrong, and whose fault was it? Answering that question is the job of an electrical engineering expert witness, and in product liability litigation, the answer usually decides the case.

An electrical engineer evaluates whether the failure is consistent with a genuine defect or with foreseeable, or unforeseeable, user behavior.
Design and standards review. Electrical products are governed by codes and standards such as the National Electrical Code, UL listings, and IEEE standards. An expert assesses whether the product met the applicable standards, and whether meeting them, or failing to, contributed to the injury.
Fire origin and cause in electrical fires. Many product liability cases are also fire cases. When a fire is suspected to have an electrical origin, an electrical engineer works to confirm or rule out the electrical system as the ignition source, often alongside a fire investigator.
Shock and electrocution analysis. In injury cases involving electric shock, the expert evaluates whether proper grounding, insulation, and protective devices were present and functioning, and whether their absence caused the injury.
Why these cases fail without the right expert
Electrical failure cases are unusually hostile to non-experts. The evidence is technical, often partially destroyed, and easy to misread. An attorney who tries to argue causation from a burn pattern and a product manual is walking into a cross-examination they can't win, because the other side will have an engineer and they won't.
The credibility gap is the whole issue. A qualified electrical engineering expert witness produces conclusions grounded in testing, accepted engineering principles, and the relevant standards, and can defend each one on the stand. That's what turns a theory about what happened into an opinion a court will accept. Just as important, the expert can dismantle the opposing theory. If the opposing party is likely to retain an engineer, you need one too, and ideally earlier than they do.
